Ancient Wall Clock Origins



The first mechanical clocks, pendulums that have been developed in the late thirteenth century, probably by monks to tell them when it was time to attend their offices, or hours of service. These early mechanical clocks do not have brand or any other form of show time. They were usually placed in bell towers to strike the bells of the church.

It was the astronomer Galileo who designed the first pendulum clock in 1640. Around 1656 the clocks began to be much used and were called "shake-on-the-wall" because they were mounted high on the wall to make room for their long pendulums. Wag-on-the-clocks were first made in the United States in late 1700.

In the U.S., most of the early clocks were made in Connecticut. They were used in schools, churches and offices. In 1845, eight great first day watches were manufactured and that has become very popular because of their big guys and easy to read dials.

A type of extremely accurate clock was called the governor to the fact that the other watches could be set by hand, which was extremely accurate. "Time of the railroad, which many cities set their clocks by because of its precision was necessary because the clocks of the regulator that the railroads used. Later, this term was generally applied to clocks without regard to its accuracy.

From around 1895 to 1900, the company of Edward Baird Plattsburgh, NY, and Sidney did watch advertising campaigns for various companies. If you find a watch called Queen Ann, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Charlotte, Queen Jane, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mab, the Queen Victoria or Queen Mary, you have probably found a clock made by Ansonia Clock Company. Clocks were first available in early 1900 and has had cases of black walnut, oak or mahogany.
